DIY Game-themed birthday
If your child loves Roblox or Minecraft, a game-themed birthday cake can become the centerpiece of the entire party. The good news is that you do not need professional cake-decorating skills to create one. With a simple buttercream cake, colorful block decorations and a few game-inspired toppers, you can make a cake that looks impressive but is still achievable at home. If you have a basic cake ready, move straight to the bottom for decoration inspirations.
What You Will Need
For an approximately 18–20 cm round cake, prepare:
- Two layers of your favorite sponge cake
- 700–900 g of buttercream
- White buttercream for the main coating
- Fondant in blue, black, yellow and green
- Small Roblox figures or printed cake toppers
- A cake board
- Rolling pin
- Small square cutter or sharp knife
- Spatula and cake scraper
- Wooden cake-topper sticks
- Optional edible Roblox cake image or wafer topper
You can use homemade sponge cake, cake mix or even ready-made cake layers. The decorating is what really creates the Roblox effect.
Step 1: Fill and Stack the Cake
Make sure the cake layers are completely cool before decorating.
Place the first sponge layer on a cake board and spread an even layer of buttercream over it. Add the second cake layer and gently press it into position.
For an extra flavor, you can add strawberry or raspberry jam between the layers. If using jam, pipe a ring of buttercream around the edge before adding the filling to prevent it from leaking out.
Chill the stacked cake for about 20 minutes.
Step 2: Cover the Cake with White Buttercream
Apply a thin crumb coat of buttercream over the entire cake. This first layer traps loose crumbs and makes the final coating much easier.
Refrigerate for another 20–30 minutes.
Next, apply a thicker layer of white buttercream. Smooth the sides with a cake scraper and level the top with a spatula.
Don’t worry if the finish isn’t absolutely perfect. Once the Roblox decorations are added, small imperfections become much less noticeable.
Step 3: Make Colorful Roblox/Minecraft-Style Blocks
This is where the cake starts to look like it belongs in a game.
Roll out blue, black, yellow and green fondant to approximately 2–3 mm thick.
Cut it into lots of small squares of roughly the same size.
Arrange the squares around the lower part of the cake to create a pixelated design. Instead of making perfectly even rows, build irregular clusters:
- 2–4 blocks high in some places
- single blocks higher up the cake
- small gaps between groups
- alternating blue, black, yellow and green sections
The irregular pattern creates a much more interesting block-game effect.

Step 4: Add Roblox/Minecraft Decorations
Now add the elements that make the theme instantly recognizable.
One of the easiest options is to use small Roblox character figures that your child already owns. Wash reusable plastic decorations appropriately before placing them near food and, where practical, place them on a small food-safe barrier rather than directly on the frosting.
Another option is to use printed Roblox cake toppers. Attach printed characters to cardstock, carefully cut them out and secure them to cake-topper sticks.
You can also add a simple sign such as:
LEVEL 8 (or 9, 10, etc) – Buy HERE

HAPPY BIRTHDAY – Buy HERE

or
LEVEL 8 UNLOCKED! – Buy HERE

Change the number to match your child’s age.
Step 5: Create a Roblox/Minecraft Avatar Topper
For a DIY alternative, make your own block-style avatar from colored cardstock or fondant.
Use simple geometric shapes:
- square head
- rectangular body
- rectangular arms
- two block-shaped legs

Try combining yellow, blue, green and black for a classic gaming look.
You don’t need to reproduce a particular Roblox character exactly. A simple blocky avatar immediately gives the cake a game-inspired appearance.

Step 6: Add 3D Blocks
Small fondant cubes are an easy way to give the cake more dimension.
Shape blue, green, yellow and black fondant into cubes and place several on top of the cake. Add a few more around the cake board.
For an even stronger building-game effect, you can create rectangular pieces resembling toy building bricks.
Keep the decorations concentrated in several areas rather than covering every available space. A little empty white space makes the colorful decorations stand out much more clearly.

Choosing the Best Color Scheme
For a stronger gaming look, I like:
Royal blue + black + bright yellow + vivid green
These saturated colors look especially effective against smooth white buttercream (BUY HERE).
If you want the cake to look more dramatic, make black and blue the dominant colors and use yellow and green only as accents.
Complete the Birthday Table
Once the cake is finished, use the same colors for the rest of the birthday decorations.
Try:
- Blue, black, yellow and green balloons (BUY HERE or HERE)
- Pixel-style birthday banners (Buy HERE)
- Block-shaped cupcake toppers (Buy HERE)
- Matching paper plates and napkins (Buy HERE or HERE)
- Small Roblox figures around the cake stand (Buy HERE)
- “LEVEL UP!” signs (BUY HERE)
- Personalized gaming-style place cards (BUY HERE)
- Getting a whole set (BUY HERE)
Repeating the same four colors throughout the room makes even simple DIY decorations look like one coordinated party theme.

Final Tip: Personalize It
The best part of making your own Roblox birthday cake is that you can design it around your child’s favorite part of the game.
Add their name, age, favorite colors or favorite Roblox characters. You could even create a small scene on top of the cake using figures from games they enjoy.
And don’t worry about achieving professional perfection. For children, seeing their favorite game transformed into their birthday cake is usually far more exciting than perfectly smooth buttercream.
Important: Remove wooden sticks, paper decorations, plastic figures and other non-edible items before cutting and serving the cake.
